lulz @ Thomas Paine

He's a silly goose.
I love Thomas Paine :)

So, I'm currently reading The Age of Reason and I was thoroughly enjoying Paine's thoughts on theology and the role science has to play in that, and then comes along a seemingly random tangent on dead languages.

Apparantly, Thomas Paine has a personal vendetta against the study of dead language, because he spent a great deal of effort into explaining why studying dead languages was utterly pointless.

He went from talking about the study of science being the true theology to talking about how the study on languages is not only pointless but detrimental to expanding scientific study.

While this is probably a point I disagree with him on, I found it fantastically amusing. I highly advise that you check it out.
